The Soldier
WOW … It’s been forever since I’ve written …… the world continues to spin toward insanity …. Not to be a complete and utter pessimist ….. but things are definitely going haywire … BOO ……
Which leads me to my topic for today.
The American Soldier
I write this coming from the unique perspective .. having been an American soldier for the better part of 8 years ….. most of that time on active duty ….. stationed and deployed to many different parts of the world. On many different missions … My time was from 1988 to 1996 ….
The Army and Soldiers are much different in the world today .. I know this. But some things are the same … I’m sure of it ..
Many people (mostly on the “right”) put soldiers up on this incredibly high pedestal. They view these defenders of the American way as nothing more than heroes …. Which … I have to admit … they are.
It takes a special person to throw yourself into harms way for a way of life.
But more than that, soldiers are HUMAN. It seems that many overlook this fact and then when things go askew, wrong, or even horribly wrong …. Everyone is shocked. Glenn Beck was talking about the movie Three Kings today. Three Kings is about three American soldiers who hatch a plot to steal millions of dollars worth of gold during Operation Desert Storm. Glenn was lamenting on the fact that it portrays American soldiers in a bad light …….. perhaps it does.
Not all American soldiers are fine upstanding citizens who’s purpose to join the military was to “Protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.” Some, I hate to tell you this .. are nothing less than complete and utter scumbags … I know ….. I served with thousands of soldiers … and I did run into a couple of scumbags.
But I can tell you this … I was truly only a couple out of the thousands I knew ….. For the most part, the people I met while serving my country were some of the best, most upstanding people I have ever met .. and I would have fought alongside and even died if need be for them .. and for you.
I guess my point is ….. give soldiers a break …… honor them … respect them …. But don’t see them as super heroes …. See them as human. As men and women who do a very very difficult job …. And volunteered to do that.
That way …. When we ….. I mean when they make a mistake ……. They don’t get slammed so hard …..
Being a soldier is hard enough without a countries expectations for perfection heaped upon their shoulders ….
…. I know ….. I’ve been there …….
Which leads me to my topic for today.
